Macworld 2008

Posted by Josh

Holy foshizzles. I’d give an arm to be there right now. [Read Engadget’s “live” cover of Macworld, or maybe a more concise one on NYtimes.com.]

As of posting, Steve has announced a few important releases (that I care about, at least).

He’s announced a few “new features” for the iPhone, some of them things you can do by hacking your iPhone. (Multiple home screens, anyone?) Then again, there’s also sending SMSs to multiple people, as well as a new Maps application that gives you directions like a GPS. And you can move icons around. Ooooh. Four million iPhones have been sold over the past 200 days, meaning 20,000 iPhones a day.

New to iTunes - movie rentals (30 days to start, 24 hours to finish) for $2.99 if it’s old and $3.99 if its a new release.

Time capsule - back up data wirelessly to a remote hard drive.

Apple TV Take 2- Apple TV, but no computer required. Connects through a router, I guess.

The macbook air. Holy canoli I want one of these. 0.16″ thick at thinnest point, 0.76″ thick at thickest point. Full (mac) keyboad. Keyboard lights up when its dark. Multitouch support for trackpad.

The only caveat, if you consider it one, is the lack of an optical drive. That’s right folks - there’s no cd drive. You can buy a $99 add on drive, or, as Apple chooses to advertise, use the new “remote disk” features. In short, the feature allows you to insert the cd into the drive of another mac or pc and then wirelessly connect.

The USB ports, headphone jack, and micro-dvi are on a panel that folds out at a touch - as usual, the power supply port is the Apple magnetic thingy-ma-jig. Battery life= 5 hours, almost triple my laptop running the junk we call Vista. (But it’s so prettyyy.) 13.3 inch display, built in microphone and webcam, 1.6GHz-dualcore, 2gb RAM, 80GB drive, Bluetooth, yada yada.

Plus, it’s eco-friendly, with an aluminum, easily recycled case. Mercury and arsenic-free display, bromide and PVC free cicuit board, and 50% less volume for retail packaging.

All yours for $1799.

Macbook Air

I’m dying here.
